National Family Medicine Residency Program

About the Program

The Wright Center offers accredited, comprehensive, and community-focused residency programs throughout northeast Pennsylvania and across the United States. As the largest Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education consortium in the country, our innovative national curriculum trains residents to provide care to the nation’s most vulnerable patients.

Our Family Medicine Residency immerses residents in high-performing, certified Patient-Centered Medical Homes, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), and community-based hospitals. Residents are empowered to lead clinical and educational improvement efforts and complete a multi-year community-orientated primary care project focused on improving health outcomes for their patients.

Our unique National Family Medicine Residency was established in 2013 and now spans four states and two coasts, addressing physician workforce shortages and escalating rural healthcare disparities. Our innovative national consortium model brings together the residency experience of The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, the educational infrastructure of A.T. Still University and its School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA), and the osteopathic training support of Still OPTI to create a dynamic team focused on the success of the residents. Local program directors oversee the operations at each site and work with the leadership teams from the partnering FQHCs. We are fully accredited ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition.

We have established training locations in Tucson, Arizona (El Rio Community Health Center); New Richmond, Ohio (HealthSource of Ohio); Auburn, Washington (HealthPoint); and Washington, DC (Unity Health Care).

Eligibility requirements

Osteopathic applicants

Completion of the first two (2) years of medical education in a College of Osteopathic Medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).

Allopathic applicants

• Forty (40) hours of didactic education in osteopathic principles and hands-on training in the diagnosis and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for somatic dysfunction.
• One hundred sixty (160) hours of clinical training with a board-certified NMM/OMM or CSPOMM preceptor in an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)-focused practice. Attestation of osteopathic clinical training is required for this option.
• Completion of the Core Osteopathic Recognition Readiness Examination (CORRE) and submission of the examination score report.
• At least one Letter of Recommendation from a doctor of osteopathy (DO) who is board certified in any specialty and can describe your ability to integrate OPP/OMM into patient care.

About Unity Health Care

Unity Health Care is committed to reaching people wherever they are to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high-quality health care that is accessible to all and advances health equity in Washington, DC Founded in 1985 as the Health Care for the Homeless Project, Unity provided primary health care services to homeless individuals and families that resided in local emergency shelters or on the streets of the District of Columbia, Unity Health Care is now comprised of 9 community health centers, 11 medical sites in local homeless shelters, 2 school-based health centers, medical walking outreach, and the DC Department of Corrections medical program. Within their clinics, Unity Health Care offers primary care and specialty services including oral health, behavioral health, OB/GYN, infectious disease care, and podiatry. Unity provides our residents with a unique opportunity to train in correctional and homeless medicine and elective opportunities in various specialties.

Rotations for our residents occur in different training locations, including various Unity Health Care sites, Howard University Hospital, Children’s National Health System, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and United Medical Center. As a resident within the Unity system, Unity will be your home base. Here you will be part of a team of more than 980 compassionate, multicultural, multilingual professionals from both primary care and specialty service fields. Residents are placed at one of our two Unity resident clinic sites for their continuity clinic - Upper Cardozo or Parkside Health Center.

We also utilize technology to foster collaborative and remote learning opportunities within our NFMR. Our learners share their Community-Oriented Primary Care research projects and participate in didactic opportunities with other NFMR residents across the country on a consistent basis throughout the year.
