RESOLUTION

by the Unity Health Care, Inc. Board of Directors

Recognizing

Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. and Charles K. Barber, Esq.

WHEREAS, Health Care for the Homeless Project (HCHP) was founded in 1985 to serve the health and social service needs of homeless persons in shelters, and on the streets of Washington, D.C.;

WHEREAS, Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. was one of the pioneering visionaries behind the founding of HCHP;

WHEREAS, Dr. Barber served as founding Chair of HCHP from 1985-1991;

WHEREAS, he recruited his son, Charles to join the Board in 1990;

WHEREAS, HCHP expanded its mission in 1996, and became Unity Health Care, Inc.;

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Charles Barber as Chairman, Unity continued to expand it’s mission further in 2001, by undertaking the operation of the former PBC Clinics;

WHEREAS, today, 2003, Unity is the leading provider of primary health care services to the indigent and medically underserved in Washington, D.C.;

WHEREAS, there has been a continuity from our founder, Dr. Barber, to the present day through his son Charles, an eighteen (18) year length of service;

THEREFORE be it resolved by the Unity Board of Directors, that as an expression of gratitude to our founder Jesse and his son Charles, that from this day forward, this Corporate Conference Room (or wherever it will be located) will always be known as the Dr. Jesse B. Barber, Jr. Conference Room in perpetual memory of our founding Chairman.

August 18-24: National Health Center Week, 2002

As part of the events celebrating National Health Center Week in Washington, D.C., Unity Health Care, Inc.  Washington’s largest nonprofit health and social services organization was honored with a Resolution of the Council of the District of Columbia for its work in the city since 1985.  The resolution salutes Unity Health Care ad the nonprofit community health centers of the District of Columbia for their dedication work on behalf of those who are medically underserved.

 

The resolution reads as follows:

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

July 2, 2002

 

To recognize and honor Unity Health Care, Inc., and the nonprofit Community Health Centers of the District of Columbia for the provision of high quality, comprehensive health care that is accessible, coordinated, culturally and linguistically competent, and community directed for all underserved populations; and to join in the celebration of National Health Center Week, August 18-24, 2002.

 

WHEREAS, Unity Health Care, Inc., a nonprofit organization has been dedicated to serving Washington, D.C. residents in need of a rage of critical health care services since 1985;

 

WHEREAS, Unity Health Care, Inc., became the federal government’s emergency grantee for the Community Health Program in 1996, and in June 2001, joined the D.C. Healthcare Alliance, a collaborative of a variety of local health care providers whom provide wraparound services to those most in need in the District of Columbia.

 

WHEREAS, Unity Health Care, Inc., provides in all eight Wards of the city thought eleven Community Health Centers, three Specialized Health Centers, services at eleven sites serving homeless people at two mobile units;

WHEREAS, Unity Health Care, Inc., is a member of the National Association of Community Health Centers, an organization that promote service to the not for profit Community, Migrant and Homeless Health Centers that provided health care to America’s poor and medically underserved;

 

WHEREAS, for over thirty years, these Community Health Centers have been responsible for bringing doctors, basic health services and facilities into the nation’s neediest and most isolated communities.

 

WHEREAS, Community Health Centers serve the working poor, the uninsured, as well as high risk and vulnerable populations;

 

WHEREAS, today, there are more than eleven million people at more than 3,000 health center delivery sites spanning urban and rural communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands provide innovative programs in primary and preventive care; and

 

WHEREAS, with the support enlisted from the federal and local government, Community Health Centers build a strong community based health System that holds promise of transforming the way health care is delivered in the District of Columbia and the nation.

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this resolution may be cited as the “National Health Center Week Recognition Resolution of 2002”.

 

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia salutes Unity Health Care, Inc., and the nonprofit Community Health Centers of the District of Columbia for their dedication and work on behalf of the medically underserved.

 

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the District of Columbia Register.

 

 

Unity Health Care, Washington D.C.’s largest nonprofit health and social services organization, serves individuals and families in all eight Wards of the District of Columbia through its network of eleven (11) Community Health Centers, three (3) Specialized Health Centers, eleven (11) sites serving homeless people, and two (2) mobile units.  Nearly 40,000 people -- working poor, uninsured, immigrants, homeless and the formerly incarcerated -- benefited from its services in 2001. Most of the patients live below the federal poverty level.
