A. JANELLE GOETCHEUS, M.D. CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, UNITY HEALTH CARE, INC. RECEIVES AMA’S “PRIDE IN THE PROFESSION” AWARD
A. Janelle Goetcheus, M.D., a powerful force in support of DC's homeless and indigent people since the 1970's, was one of the four recipients of the prestigious Pride in the Profession award presented by the American Medical Association in 2002. The peer-to-peer award, presented in association with the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, is awarded to physicians who have made heroic contributions to their communities as healers and leaders. It honors physicians whose devotion to the highest values of medical practice have healed patients, enriched communities, and inspired colleagues.
This award recognizes Dr. Goetcheus’s leadership, service, and integrity. Her efforts have helped overcome the challenges of today's changing health care climate in the District of Columbia, and have brought healing and hope to people of all ages and from all walks of life. In recommending Dr. Goetcheus for this prestigious award, John J. Lynch, M.D., of the Washington Cancer Institute, and a leader in the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, described her by using four simple, yet powerful words: “innovative, talented, strong and inspirational.” Upon learning of Dr. Goetcheus’s award, Vincent A. Keane, Chief Executive Officer of Unity Health Care, Inc. added: “She is also passionate about her work, caring for those in need, and devoted to those she serves.”
A Family Physician, Dr. Goetcheus received her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1965. She did her residency at Evanston Hospital, in Evanston, IL. In 1979, Dr. Goetcheus founded Columbia Road Health Services, a medical clinic for Central American refugees and other medically underserved persons. In 1985, she founded Christ House as a live-in respite care facility for homeless men and women who are ill. There have been approximately 3,100 admissions to Christ House since it opened on Christmas Eve, 1985. She co-founded Health Care for the Homeless, the precursor of Unity Health Care, and has served as its only medical director. Charles Barber, Chairman of the Board of Unity Health Care said: “The Board joins Dr. Goetcheus’s many friends and colleagues who are celebrating this recognition of her work.” He added: “The policies we set at the Board are always inspired by Janelle’s compassion and unbridled dedication to her patients.”
The other physicians honored with the 2002 Pride in the Profession award are: Ronald Paul Bangasser, M.D., a Family Practice physician from Redland, CA; Thomas A. Cornwell, M.D., also a Family Practice physician from Chicago, IL; and Charles Edwin Horton, M.D., a Plastic Surgeon from Norfolk, VA.
